The British Standards covering the 'Selection and Positioning of Portable Fire Extinguishers' (BS5306 Part 8 2012) states that 'Powder Extinguishers should generally not be specified for use indoors, unless mitigated by a Health and Safety Risk Assessment'.

This is due to possible breathing problems with asthmatics and other vulnerable people and a more general risk from misuse of Powder Extinguishers. They can also hamper evacuation due to reduced visibility.

If you have a Powder Extinguisher on your business premises you must have a Health and Safety Risk Assessment which includes the possible risks associated with using Powder Extinguishers and how you have mitigated the risks.
